BTB Rabbitry is a backyard, sustainability endeavor. It is not affiliated with any rabbit clubs. It was created as a way to secure an efficient, healthy protein source for our family and friends and has grown to be an operation where extra rabbits can be sold to outside interests.
Occasionally rabbits are sold from our rabbitry as breeders/pets, however, most leave with the intent of being dinner for someone or something. There are enough rabbits in this world that we don't breed with the mindset that any are available for the pet market. Our rabbits are selected for health, carcass dress out and temperament in that order.
We have been breeding for the past three years but have only really felt like we have a clear idea about where we are headed and what we are doing this past year or so. A rabbitry is not cheap, and it isn't easy. A successful rabbitry takes much more time and effort than any other livestock I've raised.
The fact that rabbits seem to be easy to raise and keep healthy in a production setting (or pet tbh) are the two biggest misconceptions we had and have run across. Those two traits are not inherent to this prey animal and must be bred for overtime. Rabbits are fragile creatures whose biggest liability is their size and position in the natural food chain.
Don't misunderstand raising rabbits can be rewarding, therapeutic (petting soft bunnies and all), fulfilling and delicious. Just keep in mind that there is quite an investment; time, blood, sweat, tears and of course dollars; involved with raising rabbits and that's the best advice I have.
All our rabbits are feed a locally produced commercial pellet, various grains (oats and barley), and organic greens grown on property. No rabbits are treated with antibiotics as we practice a strict cull procedure for illness as this is the most reliable way to ensure a healthy herd.
